Description

Ultra Fractal 5.04 (five-layers). I've just been studying some of Patrick Heron's work online though I've only scratched the surface. Anyone intrigued/interested can find loads of material online to satisfy their curiosity. My particular interest was to learn something of his subtle use of colour, and something of his viewpoint might be gleaned from this comment: "There is no shape that is not conveyed to you by colour, and there is no colour that can present itself to you without involving shape. If there is no shape then the colour would be right across your retina' ". As to my image, this is the master as rendered to disc from UF. It was then taken into Painter where I experimented with and produced four other versions. You learn something of the impact of colour on composition by doing this kind of thing. Here the cool colours have a light touch, the browns quietly forceful, but the focal point is undoubtedly that warm block in the lower-right corner. The yellow shape in the left- upper area is its understated foil, and both work to counter-balance the otherwise stripped, perpendicular structure. Study brings reason! Cliff.
