View from "Last Stand Hill" at The Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument in eastern Montana.
June 25th, 1876 was a very bad day for Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer and the U.S. Seventh Cavalry. It was a very good day for Chief Crazy Horse and the combined forces of Lakota, Northern Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes under his command.
I first visited this spot more than fifty years ago (about 1963). Very little has changed about the landscape...other than a few scattered buildings. What has changed is that the Native Americans who fought Custer here more than 135 years ago are now honored rather than forgotten. While time doesn't heal all wounds, some things do improve.

Just like herein the U.K., just who was here first, who's land is it really.. That land was the Indians.. You, we, the white man took it, so... And it happens even now.. Its very good that now the Indian nation, what survives, is honoured and respected.. Lets hope the East Europeans remember this in Britain when the British people become the minority.. from the depictions of Custer in movies, I wonder what kind of officer he actually. I do not feel sorry for the forces that was robbing the land of the Native Americans.

It was a similar story over here with our Aborigines. Somehow, history books implied that 'they' were the invaders/bad guys and not the white blokes from ships! In fact, they weren't even counted as people in our annual national population census until 1967.

Indeed, it's good that we now respect those who were here before. Custer has been honored in many ways, and now Crazy Horse is having his image carved into a mountain. We saw that last year, and it's most impressive. This is a lovely,and rather haunting photo, Bill - I like it very much!

very good shot. i saw in the magazine " the old west" this month or last month the photos of some of the Indians that fought there and was honoring a fallen man. not sure which side the fallen man was on.

Beautiful photo with the fence/gate symbolizing the divide between the present and the past. I recall having read about this battle and the archeological diggings trying to determine exactly where individual soldiers and Indians fought, and died. I had trouble getting an idea of the lay of the land. This photo sure has been a great help! Keep up the good work! :-) PS - computer problems after the "police" virus, and a lot of problems at work. Resulting in so little I can create or comment on. Sigh. Now Internet Explorer is messing about, too. :-(
