Description

A remarkably diverse ecosystem on a group of slipper limpets Crepidula fornicata. The tubes are the Keeled Tubeworm (Pomatoceros triqueter), The calcareous tube is triangular in section and can be a common sight on rocks of the lower shore. They are suspension feeders, tentacles emerging when covered by water. The planktonic larva settles on the rock to first secrete a thin, transparent tube, quickly forming a larger, mineralised one latter. Once established they grow quickly and may be mature in 4 months. The tubes are porous and this will confine them to the lower shore to avoid desiccation. (info Field Studies Council). There is also an Acorn Barnacle and a Seasquirt on the rightside end.
