Description

This is a thick, fat, about 10 cm. long caterpillar, Karel discovered in our garden in August. It is from a very beautiful looking moth: Sphinx ligustri, known as the Privet Hawk Moth. From Wikipedia: A species of moth found in most of the Palearctic ecozone. It has a 12 centimetres (4.7 in) wingspan, and is found in urban areas, forests and woodlands. The male Privet Hawk-moth can make a hissing sound, if disturbed, by rubbing together a set of scales and spines at the end of its abdomen. As its name describes, the caterpillars feed on privets, as well as ash trees, lilacs, jasmine, and a number of other plants. In Dutch: Ligusterpijlstaart. Thank you very much for your lovely comments on my earlier uploads, it's very much appreciated. Of course, in zoom more details.

That would be some 'eye-candy' for one of my birds, so nice and fat ... ;o)) but I would be more careful than those birds, getting any closer to this little critter, because of his dangerous looking rear-end ? never-the-less, a terrific looking specimen and a fine macro Jacominchen, a pristine presentation !
