Description

Agatha Parker. She had been the denizen of the library for as long as anyone could remember, but the older kids knew her as a cool old lady; Nothing in her library was banned, nothing was censored. And if you wanted to know why, she would tell you of the cultural importance of the James Joyces and the Henry Millers of the world. Agatha had been to Woodstock, she had been to the March on Washington and she had two Masters from Georgetown; now an aging and wiser hippie from the sixties. No kids of her own, married several times, but she loved the young minds that she saw everyday. And if she could instill in them the urge to read, to mine the knowledge from her books, she was content. Here's to all the "Old Miss Parkers'" of the teaching world; the ones that care, the ones who have given their lives to helping our kids succeed.

Magnificent portrait of Agatha! I love the story you wrote to go with it. I wish there were more real-life Agatha Parkers out there.

She sounds like the kind of teacher who could get a student to see a door where formerly the student could only see a wall.
