Description
Aka, Armistice Day.
Captured on Father's Day, 6/15/14.
For a salute to my fellow veterans on this historic day, I had no photos in my files depicting any people who had served in the military, so I chose the venue of the forward deck of the battleship USS Iowa, berthed in the Port of Los Angeles.
The Iowa is indeed a veteran, having been launched back on 27 August 1942, and commissioned on 22 February 1943. It had participated in many battles since then. Its nickname is The Big Stick.
Iowa's main battery, partially shown in this photo, consists of nine 16" (406.4mm)/50 caliber Mark 7 guns, six of which are depicted here, which could fire 2,700 lb (1,200 kg) armor-piercing shells 20 nmi (23 mi; 37 km).
Anchors aweigh.

Beautiful and timely photo. It is due to the sacrifice of all the selfless soldiers that we enjoy the freedoms we all have. We should never forget that, and not just on Veteran's Day, but everyday. To all who served, thank you!
