Don't worry about missing part 1: It sucked. This took forever and didn't really turn out as well as I was hoping, but you can be the judges of that. Done in the GIMP.

As an experiment I would suggest giving the whole thing a colour cast to make the colour scheme more sympathetic. I've never seen the GIMP (though I have a Linux friend who has it) but in Photoshop this would involve picking a colour, creating a new layer with the layer mode set to "Color", setting the Transparency to 50%(ish) and filling the layer with this colour. A technique I use a lot.
