Description
The de Havilland DH.98 Mosquito was a British multi-role combat aircraft with a two-man crew that served during and after the Second World War. It was one of few operational front-line aircraft of the era constructed almost entirely of wood and was nicknamed "The Wooden Wonder". The Mosquito was also known affectionately as the "Mossie" to its crews. Originally conceived as an unarmed fast bomber, the Mosquito was adapted to roles including low to medium-altitude daytime tactical bomber, high-altitude night bomber, pathfinder, day or night fighter, fighter-bomber, intruder, maritime strike aircraft, and fast photo-reconnaissance aircraft. It was also used by the British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) as a fast transport to carry small high-value cargoes to, and from, neutral countries, through enemy-controlled airspace.

@353Cathedral And since the Mosquito was made out of wood it couldn't be detected on radar.

I had an uncle who was a photographer in photo-reconaissance versions of the Halifax and Mosquito aircraft during 1943-44. In the former, his plane often trailed bombing raids over Germany, and came in after the attack to photograph the results; but since it was relatively slow, the crew had plenty of anxious moments if defending aircraft were able to pick it up on radar. With the Mosquito it was a different story because the reconaissance versions were stripped down to the bare essentials, and would climb to 25,000 ft. to swoop down over the French coast at over 400 mph to snap pictures of the German defense installations prior to D-day. Only the fastest German fighters like the FW-190, the DO-335 or the Me-262 were capable of catching the Mosquito at such speeds, and only rarely did they bother to give chase. My uncle said the missions in the Mosquito gave him much more confidence than in the Halifax.
