Description
I just saw an image posted by someone who hit upon the same idea I did but uses it in a slightly different manner. The idea is to use a habitat which can serve both as part of a Martian Transit Vehicle (MTV), a transit vehicle from earth to mars...and as a base vehicle on the surface of mars. There would not be enough propellant to return to mars orbit on this vehicle so my idea went one step further and took the same design and used it as a transit vehicle between the surface of mars and orbit. The propellant tanks and cages are part of the transit vehicle and remain in orbit. The white unfinished cone like objects are the lander and base vehicle. The lander returns to the orbiting MTV when it has deposited some crew onto the surface of mars. The base vehicle has habitat quarters in place of propellant and cannot leave mars once on the surface. The MTV would be leaving mars with just 2 crew. The remaining crew stays on mars until a future MTV retrieves them. For this reason, the MTV still requires a habitat module for the returning crew. In the image, the MTV is using Venus for gravity assist to mars. This is not always possible but it is preferable to going direct to mars.

Thanks, I'll be texturing the landers pretty soon and maybe post this as it would appear orbiting mars.
