Description

Woke up this morning to rain & a rainbow in a strange orange sky. One day, I'll figure out how to really shoot rainbows effectively, but for now, this was the best I could do (though it did look better before I compressed it down to fit into the 500 kb limit)...

That is a strange orange sky; the atmosphere is definitely disturbed! Lovely rainbow capture!

I like the hue on this and like you, I find that resizing to fit the requirements of RR really does the quality of the pics no good at all.

Marvelous capture and I found out a way by accident on how to compress it without loosing any depth the other day. I had my favorite photo which I had uploaded to facebook and I could not find the original of it so I right clicked the one on facebook and saved it to my picture files and when I looked at the pixels to see how much I needed to try and resize it I found out that when I had uploaded it to facebook they had downsized the pixels with the upload therefore I did not have to do anything with it to post it here and it looked as good as the original. Just had to share this neat short cut...:))

I use Photoshop to reduce my photos & it offers much more control than what Facebook does. How good a job it does depends on the complexity of the image & the range of color tones. For simple images, it's not a problem, but the more complex the image & the more subtle the color transitions, the worse the result tends to be.

Yes, compression is a real problem; and with a shot like this---which depends on smooth gradations through very similar hues, as well as on the saturation of that orange-deep-red---compression bleaches some of it out, flattens the gradations, etc. I'm sure your original was more vivid. But in zoom this gives us a strong feel of a very transformed sky. (And I see that you got 1 full view before me, and it makes me want to cry, "people, do you know what you're missing???" I may have told you my story of going to traditional heaven, and god or st peter, or whoever, meets you at the gate, goes over your life, then drops the book and shouts, "you didn't ZOOM!" And they send you back to earth until you've zoomed 8 million times...) (I don't accept that heaven, but it does come in handy for stories...) In zoom, the rich saturated red-orange-browns are prodigious. And most of the shot contains those hues, with the rainbow like an abstract climax, a coming-forth of the light within the sky. You've posted some beautiful sky shots of late, and they've all been quite alluring and deep...I like the light behind the left tree, too. Very mysterious. A fine imbued sky capture.
