Excellent, light, textures modelling and background. Looks like the movie. The stary backround looks (almost) real here. Too often sci fi artists feel necessary to put a cloudy interstellar picture taken from a 10 hours exposure photo of the deep sky, in addition obtained with an ultrasensitive CCD camera pluged on a giant telescope. Completely unreallistic. In the reality, with the space ship in the foreground, the sky would be completely black. Only if you turn the camera oposite to the sun, without any additional lights and bright surfaces, you would see the stars.

Thanks Dickbill. I appreciate your comments.

So, the hangar bay looks like you took a screenshot from the movie. ;')

Wow, I love all of these pics. You brilliantly captured the REALISTIC imagery that the film had untill now done so brilliantly on its own merits. Finally I can say that computer animation can replace model animation for beleivability. The crisp shadows and lighting emphasize the realism of the existing cosmos. Congrats! However, how did you model these...did you place an image in the bg, or did you just look at images or what?

AWESOME really great-my mouth is open wont shut----8-]

OK, I have a "picky" comment; 2001 had no star fields in it. Kubreck felt it would be more realistic if you showed the vast void of space, and shyed away from the Star Wars - star filled space. But I think it's an awesome render! Keep'em coming!

There were stars visible in 2001 check out this link http://www.starshipmodeler.com/2001/dis6_cf.jpg Kubrick had wanted to do know stars but feared the audience might not be able to grasp the concept of pure black space, the like that is seen on Nasa stills !

Wow...nicely done

I've had comment on three forums about these models and everyone has given great advise. Since I'm posting this reply in three locations I'll make the notes as general as possible. (what was the polygon count of the models?) The discovery model itself is about 248,000 polygons. The space pod is roughly 58,000 polygons. (did you place an image in the bg, or did you just look at images or what?) yes. I created a stary background using photoshop. It took about 3 minutes to create. (2001 had no star fields in it. Kubreck felt it would be more realistic if you showed the vast void of space) I know. but It thought the subtle star background would be cool. (all the images except the space pod are too dark.) I was going for stark shadows like you would have in space. I plan to re-renderwith a little more light once more of the textures are complete. :) (I did the Discovery a while back and never did get the textures to look right, so you have my sympathy.) Re-texturing is not a problem really. Just time consuming. Luckily I have 4D Paint. It allows me to import the objects and paint directly to the surface at just about any resolution. Then I can export it to Photoshop and finish up the final details. Unfortunately the old textures just don't cut it. (So, the hangar bay looks like you took a screenshot from the movie.) Yes. Eventually, I plan to model the entire pod bay, but that's a project unto itself. Right now most of my rendering time is taken up by a book cover project.

Very good work boy.... i like a lot your light setting (how many lights have you used?!).... the only thing i can told you is make a better background.... i've learned to make good ones (see my pictures if you want) from this homepage: http://www.ap3d.com/Alternate_Perspective.htm, under tutorials... better space.... try and tall me if it's useful for you. CIAO. GOOD WORK.
Eromanric
Quickdraw, 7 lights--- 4 were uses on the space pod headlights. Thanks. I'll check out your site.

Very Cool!! well done

Very nice indeed! Ive got to ask you. Do you have any plans to model the spacesuits from the movie?? The capture sequence were Bowman goes out to retrive Poole is still IMHO the best simulation of weightlessness ever filmed to date. cheers PE
Eromanric
Yes. I actually started modeling the helmet the other day. I was priviledge enough to see the 2001 exhibit in San Jose last year. It was a small exhibt but they had parts of the spacesuits including the helmet. I had my digital camera with me and got lots of pictures.

just great! Very professional work! Excellent!

Very impressive modeling, I love the textures on the command module. Question for you, the High-Gain antenna on the spine, the base and turn table does not look exactly right, I would love to see a close-up of that section that housed the AE-35 unit. Also do you think you could do another image from the stern showing a close-up of the nuclear engines? ;-)
Eromanric
At this time I am remodelling the engines. But I will post a close up of the AE-35 housing a little later. :-)

The background is neat as is should be. The lighting of the model re-capture the feeling of that moment, so, BRAVO. Maybe the hangar interior would work better without the blue suit...
KatesFriend
WOW! Excellent creation. It looks just like a scene from the film. You got the detailing and texturing near perfect.
Eromanric
Thanks KatesFriend. Can't belive it's bee 5 1/2 years since this was posted. How time flies.
