Description

[The Lone Gunslingers, Chapter 8, Escape and Evasion, Part II] [Previously from Part I] I don't know how Jaco is going to make that happen, but we all just shrug, if he says he can do it, then he can. Jaco gets up and goes over to the Vid-screen and looks back at us grinning. [And now, Part II] "Okay, here goes, be ready and stay behind me," says Jaco. "Sprint, you're our best runner, you take up the rear and make sure we don't lose anyone." Jaco pushes some buttons on the Vid-screen and then an air-raid siren begins blaring. The air-raid siren blares for about two-minutes and then dims and a mechanical voice can be heard from the emergency Camp speakers spread throughout the base. *Warning… Incoming Imperial Attack Squadrons… All available pilots to the Airfield… Anti-aircraft crews report to your positions… ground forces to defense perimeter… non-essential personnel to assigned bomb shelters… This is not a drill* Jaco turns and faces us and flourishes a bow. All we can do is stand with our jaws open. "Team Gunslingers are all pilots, they should be rushing to their Dart ships at the Airfield," says Jaco, "but the best part is coming, and you should be able to see it out that window." We all run over to the window just in time to see all the lights on the base go dark. "Look up," says Jaco. We look up at the dark sky and see a streak of light heading towards the base. "Are you attacking the base?" asks Misfire. "Naw, I dropped a Grackle satellite out of orbit," says Jaco. "Don't worry, it will never make it to the ground." A moment later every anti-aircraft gun on the base lights up and thousands of tracer rounds arc up into the sky chasing the incoming perceived attack. The satellite blows up in a shower of light and blinks out of existence. "How did you do this?" asks Rock. "It's what I was studying to specialize in, satellites, communications, and computer code," explains Jaco. "You humans don't exactly have the most secure systems, I hacked your Com-center." "Seriously, Jaco?" I shake my head. "If you are a dumb Raven, what the heck are the others like?" "Twenty-seven worlds conquered by the Kitsune Empire, but not ours, and they've tried for five-thousand years, and still aren't a match for our technology," Jaco bows again proudly. "I'm glad you’re on our side now, Jaco," says Misfire, "but…umm…if you're done bowing, do you think we should go now?" "Oh, yea, let’s go, stay on my tail feathers and stay tight," Jaco opens the door and we all follow him out into the snow. Jaco wasn't kidding, for someone so short he sure can run. Within ten minutes we were all sweating as we run through the dark woods. We can see vehicles with their lights blacked out on the roads off to the sides. I didn't know we even had that many vehicles. The snow under the trees wasn't too deep, but deep enough we are exhausted by the time we get to the trees behind the Dining Cabin. Jaco stops and scans the area around Dining Cabin and then motions for us to follow. We run crouched over until we are at the back of the Dining Cabin. Jaco tries the back door and it is unlocked and we slip inside. We are safe. The kitchen is abandoned, but there are still some pots with water or something boiling on the burners. Jaco turns them off as we walked past, and then we walk out to the Dining area. There is nobody around, but… "What the heck?" "What's all this?" "Is today a holiday?" The tables are piled with almost every manner of food and drink and… "Guys, look," says Rock. A banner is stretched across the Dining room. We all stop and stare at the brightly colored banner. *CONGRADULATIONS ON PASSING YOUR MID-TERMS FIRST YEAR CLASS* "Mid-terms, what the blazes," says Misfire. "I got shot for a mid-term exam?" There are other banners and posters hanging on the walls and we walk around reading them all. The banners are all mostly the same, congratulating us on a job well done, or congratulating us as First Year Gunslingers. "Umm…guys, if this was mid-terms," asks Sprint. "What are finals going to be like? "They'll probably chase us down with machine-guns, or tanks," replied Rock sitting down at one of the tables. "I think they are going to be so mad when they find out what we did." "What do they do to second years for mid-terms?" asks Twig. "Push them out on the lake in row boats and chase them with battleships?" laughs Rock. "I grew up here and had no idea it was so brutal to become a Lone Gunslinger," adds Misfire. "They shot me!" "You're still breathing, stop complaining," laughs Sprint. "Let’s eat before they get here and shoot me for starting a war," says Jaco grabbing a handful of food. "Yea, they took off the gloves and we fought back," I shout. "Who's the best class?" We pound on the tables…"First Years… First Years…First Years…" "Are you Gentleman enjoying yourselves?" I look up and the Commander, Simon, and several dozen other Gunslingers are pouring in through the door. The Commanders eyes are blazing with anger. "First Year Class reports to the Dining Cabin as ordered, Sir," shouts Jaco standing and saluting the Commander. "Can any of you tell me why Hawk Space Command transmitted an order to drop a very expensive Grackle satellite out of orbit and simulate an attack on this base?" asks the Commander. "No, Sir," we all shout together. The Commander stares at us silently for a long moment and then sighs and smiles, but I think his smile looks a bit like a Beastie Cat smiling before it pounces. "Very well, Gentleman, enjoy your banquet, tomorrow your training picks up the pace, congratulations," says the Commander and then walks off. "Here come the tanks," whispers Rock. "And the machine-guns," whispers Sprint. "Don't forget the battleships," whispers Twig. Simon walks over and bends down and stares into Jaco's eyes. "If you ever pull a stunt like this again…" Simon starts to say. "I will do it again, Sir," interrupts Jaco, and holding Simons glare. "I will do whatever is necessary to protect my partner and my alliance." I think I see the barest tug of a smile on Simon's face. "I see, well it's about time one of you show some leadership," says Simon. "Misfire, you are relieved of your duties as Class Leader. Jaco, you are the new Class Leader, let’s see how long you can hold the position." "Yes, Sir, no problem, Sir," says Misfire. Simon nods. "And Jaco, next time find a way that doesn't involve destroying expensive satellites, framing House Hawk, or trying to catch guest trainers on fire." "Sir, they shot Misfire. I should hunt them down, and they owe me a set of wings. I feel naked." "Ravens and Gunslingers, what a mix," says Simon shaking his head and walking off to join the Commander at his table. Jaco looks at me and winks. "Don't worry, I am still but yours to command, my mate." "Huh…what?" Rock's head whips around to me. "What did he mean by that?" asks Sprint. "Is there something you're not telling us?" says Twig. "That is adorable, they make a cute couple," adds Misfire. "Wait a minute, is Jaco a girl?" asks Sleepy. I turn red and bury my head in my hands.

I went through and read both parts before commenting and I'll post my thoughts on the part 1) fabulous way you drew us into the story - I could feel the tension when they were on the ice. the shock of the cold actually hit me as I read that part and I felt the panic in Jaco as s/he went under. 2) the tension in the tent when the Gunslinger team went in and Jaco Called the bluff I could go on but I'd end up writing a novel just describing the feelings that came into being. most of all, it was cool to see Jaco take the lead and get the team back to the dining hall

Jako may have a bird brain but he is no bird brain! :) Wonderful action and the ploy to hide in plain sight is a masterstoke! Only problem Jacko has is he was willing to leave Misfire for dead but thanks to Hero they went back, to me thats a real leader! Enjoyed this chapter very much!

Yes, I put the part in about Jaco leaving Misfire for a good reason. Jaco is a Raven and the Darians don't have the same value of life that the humans have. Mainly because of the Darains over-population problem and is a major cultural difference, and something I plan to use as Jaco grows as a person and adopts new values. The Ravens/Darians values are to protect their partner at all cost, and the alliances/teams as a whole without regard to the individual.
