Description
The Diné of the Monument Valley are a tight-knit community. It seemed everyone knew everyone and most were related to each other. While out, Aaron and I would occasionally encounter other trucks. Invariably, the driver would be a cousin or nephew of Aaron’s.
We stopped at what the locals call “The Hub”, a collection of plywood and two-by-four kiosks. There is a food kiosk and about a dozen others selling jewelry. The image below is a memorial to Ericsson Cly. His mother, Linda Jackson, runs the food kiosk and told me the story of her thirty-two year old son who was struck by lightning there in 2006 and killed.
Five days a week, another of Linda’s sons named Adrian Jackson pulls on a red shirt and cowboy hat and drives up to John Ford's Point in Monument Valley. There he spends the day sitting atop a horse named Pistol, trying to look epic. It has been the family business for almost one hundred years.
Most of the jewelry at The Hub is designed for women. I asked a pretty young woman if there was anything a man would like. She showed me a few rings and bookmarks made of silver. I decided to buy a fancy bookmark. It would be my one souvenir from the trip. As I waited for my change she called over a young man in a red shirt and asked for the money. It was Adrian and she was his girlfriend.
Like I said, a tight-knit community.

No, I stayed in the Monument Valley area for the entire time and then went directly to Bryce. A lot more to see on my next visit. I'll add that to my list.
