Description

While returning from Urubamba (~9,350-ft) in the Sacred Valley to Cusco (~11,300-ft) we stopped for a short period at the roadside to stretch our legs. While the highway at this point is 12,500-ft high it allowed us a good view of Nevada Ausangate (6,384 m, 20,945-ft). In the lower left of the picture are Eucalyptus trees which were imported from Australia during the second half of the 19th century and the 1st half of the 20th century during the building of the railroads. These trees adapted well to the climate and replenished the wooded areas that were used up by 300 centuries of Spanish colonial rule. The wood of the trees is used for construction, for cooking fires, and the resins are used to produce any number of ointments and medications. On the flip-side, during dry spells the deep root system of the trees tabs into the groundwater supply of the region. Because of this location, in the Tropics, around 12-13 degree south of the equator, mountains high enough to carry snow and ice year-round exceed 18,000-ft in altitude. This picture was taken on 27 August 2014, Sig....

A fascinating multi-layered landscape. The rich oranges & browns of the foreground stand out so prominently & dramatically against the gradually fading layers of the background...
