Description
I try to steer clear of political issues, but a recent news article has me somewhat "irked".
In a recent incident, a possible Russian submarine was detected in waters near the UK. Several NATO aircraft, including an RCAF CP-140 Aurora, were dispatched to track down the interloper. The British RAF and Royal Navy have no long-range sub-hunters left to do the job, it seems. So now it falls to other nations to defend the UK's territorial waters.
Not that I mind helping out a close friend & ally. However, if said friend & ally seems to be taking advantage...
The photo is, of course, a CP-140 Aurora, the RCAF's primary long range patrol aircraft. Based on the Lockheed Electra airliner, externally it resembles the P-3 Orion used by the US Navy and others. However the electronics inside are very different! I've heard much its sensors are much better than the Orion's... but my sources may be biased...

It seems Putin wants to bring back the "good ol' days" of the cold war and nuclear brinksmanship.... Problem is he doesn't have a lick of common sense.. At least Khrushchev was smart enough to weigh the consequences.... Great photo!

Very very well taken !!

The U.S. Navy is in the process of replacing the P-3 with the P-8A Poseidon, so the Orion's sensors have not been upgraded.

I live a few miles down the road from Moffett Field NAS here in California. This use to be the HQ of the Pacific Theater for all the P3C Orions (sub chasers). My neighbor was a flight engineer and even gave me one of his old helmets when he got a new one (Yep! There is still a little boy in me lol). As airframes go, the P3 is a great platform and, like the C-130 Hercules, they just seem to put upgraded avionics in them every year, so any body claiming an advantage is only correct until the next upgrade (LOL). As far as Britain is concerned I lay no claim to understand your politics, so I am sure our system is no different. All the people making decisions are politicians, not people who really know what they are talking about. I'm tired of thinking about this. . . I'm going to bed. Oh, really nice image.

62guy is correct but for over 40 years that was the way they did things with the P3. And now they will start the same thing with the P8.

I miss seeing this bird, especially the EP-3E Aries. Outstanding photo my friend!

Well, the Canadians have a good sense of humor about things that are just too sad for words at times. I recall a fake recruiting ad that said essentially: the next time granddad starts telling you about the planes he flew in tell him to stop and explain that you know all about it because you're flying it today. Some hyperbole, but it does make a point about longevity for airframes.

"They're back!" Nuff said. Nice shot!

Just about sums it up! Why would an island nation like ours need Maritime Patrol Aircraft ? I mean....it seems we no longer need a Navy......or an Air-force......and once the regular Army drops below 100,000 it can no longer be called the British 'Army', it becomes a National Defence Force :-( Sorry!!, great capture of this wonderful aircraft...thank heavens we have friends with 'kit' worth photographing.
