Description

And 55,573 Airmen from the United Kingdom, British Commonwealth, and Allied Nations (including U.S.) who served with Bomber Command didn't come back..... 125,000 flew in Bomber Command and nearly half lost their lives.. It has taken until last year to unveil this memorial.... About time.. Respect.. Dedicated to the crews of Bomber Command and those who keep the Lancaster's flying and running in Britain and Canada! Rob

High time these men got their long deserved memorial! I sincerely hope it hammers into the heads of a spoiled younger generation the price of peace and the sacrifices that price entails. No peace, no iPads! Sure they'll be back soon? When they all know they most likely didn't make it. I wonder how many people are aware of the intense war in the air that raged from the Battle of Britain until VE day? It was fierce. Thanks for the post. Good camera angle. Together with the sun and shadow it brings out all the equipment these fellows had to wear - nothing comfortable here! :-)

I echo all of the above, and would add how impressed I am by the level of detail in this monument....yes it's long overdue but so much better than many of the simple stone cross or plaque memorials that appeared soon after the event.......though the simple ones are no less important !!

Here's another echo of the above! I'd also like to say that your photo is excellent! The two foreground crewmen one in light the other in shadow really speaks volumes to me. A difficult lighting situation that has worked wonderfully here.

Distressing statistics. A gyrene hitting the beaches had better odds going for him. Agree, the differences in lighting make this an excellent study.

A very beautiful and highly deserved memorial for those brave airmen. Your angle on this is perfect, Rob! A fitting dedication to all those who continue to serve and sacrifice so we may be free from the powers of darkness.

Tonnes of cool lighting effects and marvelous detail depicted on this terrific statue in dedication to the Bomber Command, Rob. I know the American B-17 bombers and crews suffered tremendous losses over Europe.
