Description

I've been tidying some files and found this. It is definitely worth full size to get damp. Juliette is right about the noise...so content over quality once again! Update: Mark David Rogers very kindly took the grainy pic and processed it for me and this is the result, with much less grain! Clever man!

That's whipping up a frothy edge! A day for the toughest of surfers! Well found, a really atmospheric shot!

Isn't it funny how what we photographers called artistic grain back in the day has become "Noise" I like it, it gives the image an edge.

I agree with Ronnie in that the 'noise' adds a lot to the image

Rough water, I can feel the spray now. I like the land mass in the background. It looms over the scene like some great leviathan. A wonderful image and the grain does give it character.

Fantastic and very dramatic shot, Andrea :) I can hear this roaring waves. Well, perhaps its because... we have stormy weather her today.

I remember the original, and yes it had noise, but one advantage of the original is that we have more detail, even in the sand and waves. However, the softened version gives it a cleaner, almost mythic quality; and the waves are like 'pure waves', as are the droplets upfront and the almost 3D rendered beach. I like both versions (and I zoomed in both cases). And the sweep of the image, the dark hues, the dark 'nostalgic' sky (yearning sky, whatever you want to call it), against that dark shadowed shore? They make a kind of archetypal vision of the 'old sea'. You see vistas like this in Maine, Nova Scotia and Labrador: very primal and timeless. Love the shot either way. Very true to the sea. (I assume Mark used softening filters. They're very easy to use, as are blurs---if used in tiny increments, so you don't suddenly turn your image into a big mudslide. They will always erase detail, but they can create archetypal results like this.)
