Description

I took this last May on the first day the chicks were out. There were five mothers. Four were taking care of the chicks, this one was the guard. She heard the Red shoulder hawk and was watching it's every move. When the hawk came too close, she sounded the alarm and all of the chicks were hidden in about 3 seconds. The hawk never got close enough to get a chick. The mother was very diligent in making sure she kept up with it.

HAPPY NEW YEAR Bev! Beautiful photo showing how mother angles her head so she has a full 360 degree panorama of the air. Seems that hawk went hungry that day! Good focus - the small drops of water are visible on her feathers. The colors are also great! Thanks for posting! Have a great 2015! :-) (PS - I'm 1/2 way through Marc Bekoff's book. It's SO fascinating - we have loads in common with the animals, but our use of language seems to be a barrier between us and understanding the animal's communication by behavior.)
