Description

The swan goose (Anser cygnoides) is a rare large goose with a natural breeding range in inland Mongolia, northernmost China, and southeastern Russia. In Europe, there is only one free-living population in the Rhine-Neckar region. In Heidelberg, one finds the animals primarily on the banks of the Neckar. (Here I made the photo) The population included about 25 animals. Also in the not far distant wetlands of the Rhine near Lampertheim there are about 40 swan geese.
