Description

When I was thirteen I remember standing in the backyard of a friend with three other boys. We were probably talking about the plastic models we were building or some other nonsense. Suddenly my friend pointed to me and said, “Don’t move! There’s a big black spider on your shoulder!” I remember thinking that if my friend wanted to scare me he would have to do better than that. Then I looked over at my left shoulder and there it was a big black spider. I shook so violently that it fell off. It wasn’t until my experience with the Daddy Long Legs spiders during my medical problem that I got over my arachnophobia. I was completely absorbed with the sandstone sculptures I posted yesterday when I heard Aaron urgently say, “Don’t move! You’re about to step on a rattlesnake!” I remember thinking that if he wanted to scare me he would have to do better than that. Then I looked down and there it was a small rattler. “It’s just a baby”, I replied. Aaron said, “It is still as poisonous as the big ones. Now back off slowly.” Thinking of all of you I grabbed a quick shot to share before I stepped back.

Actually, if I remember correctly, it's the babies that are more dangerous than the adults, as the babies do not have the control that the Adults do when injecting the venom. Great capture here Mark

OMG .... that was close. And then to be even more presence of mind and to shoot the "corpus delicti" .... Although snakes are not my fear animal but they are me the creeps because they have their habitat everywhere. And you can not always see. Size, pattern as camouflage .... etc Thank you for this shot ... after you've determined the sweat from his forehead wiped.

Spiders I love. Rattlesnakes are more dangerous but not present in Dorset. Great shot!

Nice shot, like the monotone coloring. MIke is right - the babies are more dangerous than the adults because they have no control & release their venom all at once rather than moderating it. My friend & neighbor found that out the hard way a few years ago when he was bitten by a baby rattler & spent three days in intensive care...

Although this is a fantastic image I would prefer you think more of your own safety in the future. Baby rattlers, as has been mentioned before are indeed extremely dangerous. You must have been pranked a lot as a kid for your first reaction to always be the thought that people are just trying to scare you rather than give you a valid warning. I am glad you listened anyway and stopped in this instance because I really love your photos. I would hate it if I were to find no more posted because of a deadly rattlesnake bite. Thanks for sharing the story and the photo...he Is a pretty like fellow, but next time step away first then take a photo if you can. And keep your eyes open...where there is one baby snake there are probably others!!!!

A fine looking creature and 'capture' (?) Mark - but I would certainly keep my distance from any snake, call it respect or just being very scared ... BB

It is harder for them to strike stretched out like that. I don't think it even noticed me.
