Description

Yahagi was an Agano-class cruisers which served with the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) during World War II. She Launched on 11 November 1941 in Nagasaki,Sasebo. On 6 April 1945, Yahagi received orders for "Operation Ten-Go", to attack the American invasion force off Okinawa. Yahagi was ordered to accompany Yamato on its final suicide mission against the American fleet. The operation also included the destroyers Isokaze, Hamakaze, Yukikaze, Kasumi, Hatsushimo, Asashimo, Fuyuzuki and Shimotsuki. At 12:20 on 7 April 1945 the Yamato force was attacked by waves of 386 aircraft (180 fighters, 75 bombers, 131 torpedo planes) from Task Force 58. At 12:46, during the first wave, a torpedo hit Yahagi directly in her engine room, killing the entire engineering room crew and bringing her to a complete stop. Dead in the water, Yahagi was hit by at least six more torpedoes and 12 bombs by succeeding waves of air attacks. She sank at 14:05 at 30°47′N 128°08′E taking 445 crewmen with her. The Yahagi cruiser was under the command of capt. Tameichi Hara, the former captain of the destroyer Shigure which was one of the most celebrated ships of Japan Imperial Navy. I have read his book about the war on the Amastukaze, the Shigure and the Yahagi. I have the impression that he was a great man, able to praise his exploit and condemn his mistakes. A rare virtue.

What a fantastic render, Fujiko-san! She really is gorgeous (and well-armed). You did a super job on this, as you always do! That was a vicious battle from everything I've read and seen about it. There were many heroes - on both sides - and many hundreds of good men died. War is such a waste. My dad was stationed at Kadina Airbase in the early 50s - wives and children could live on the base with the Air Force personnel. I was very young then, but I can still remember quite a lot of Okinawa - a very beautiful island from what I remember.
