I experienced these as a child.always knocked them down so they would not impale anyone

As a child, a friend of mine got struck in the head by a big sharp one when it fell. Nasty gash, had to have many stitches. I always broke them off to use as swords to fight the invading hordes ( pirates, zombies, savages, nazis stormtroopers, green men from mars, vikings... there's always hordes of something ;)
