Description
Maybe, this should have been posted in Humor instead.
Some of my Akaflieg fellows are planning to take part in this Thursday's Red Bull Paper Wing Contest. The task is to make the best flying (whatever that means) model out of a single A-4-sheet of paper without cutting or gluing anything, just folding. They actually asked me if I can do some optimization in the wind tunnel. Maybe they hope for a special award for this particularly scientific (or dumb) approach.
We ended up with simply some photos in the calibration site that are gonna posted everywhere possible. The model is sting mounted using a clothes-peg. This little paper bird bravely stands wind speeds up to 12 meters per second. We tried some flow visualization as well. How ever, the incense cone produces too much heat compared to its amount of smog - that's why the mean flow velocity is even lower than the thermal upwind. I was not able to show a wing tip vortex or so.
One result of the investigation: Fold the sheet first that you have half the size and double the thickness to start from. This way, you get more stiffness as well as more wing loading and and can throw it with more momentum.
OK, good night
