Description

Hi! Finally inspired by playing Elite:Dangerous, something that I feel is worth posting here: 'Red Sun.' This started out as a DAZ Studio render. The Moon in the foreground was created in Z-Brush and exported as an object (you can see it in a bunch of images here, very handy). The Red Sun is just a sphere with a procedural texture created in pwEffect. There is also a pass where the 'red sun' sphere is an area light (uberArea) to do the lighting effects on the moon. The actual DAZ Studio renders are, to say the least, bland. I ran separate passes for the lights, masks for the star and the moon and background. All the fun happened in post - with a lot of hand painting, glow layers etc to move the piece to a completed state. This tutorial on Deviant Art proved very helpful: http://facundodiaz.deviantart.com/art/The-last-Supernova-Tutorial-102751332 Knoll Light Factory for the Blue Star's lens flare. Starfield & nebulas all created for this piece in the manner I've described previously. I'm really enjoying working this 'space art' phase, whenever I have enough time and mental energy to devote to actually producing some art, this is where I like to go. Maximum return and maximum fun for the limited amount of time I have these days. It's a return to the kind of work I started out doing in POVRay many years ago, and having tools like DAZ Studio/ZBrush/Photoshop in my box make it that much more fun and exciting. With sincere apologies to those of you who keep popping in hoping for some dragons or sorceresses.... maybe someday :)

As much as I love your fantasy art, I'm just happy to see you producing work that fulfills you. As always, I appreciate you sharing techniques to help the rest of us still struggling along. I love that you're modeling so much these days. It adds a personal touch to your work. I'm especially impressed with how the sun came out with all of your layering and painting in PS.
