I like the mat effect and the overall grittiness of this image. They really contribute to the somber mood of the composition. Interesting choice, the dull sand color, not something I would normally associate with this mood but it works well here.

The dull sand colour was actually a happy accident, as I tend to agree with you - it is not a colour I would normally associate with this mood. I just love it when that happens ;) Thanks so much!!

I agree with you and 'brewgirlca', that color combination shouldn't work for such a sombre mood, but I think the monochromatic nature of the whole pallet is what makes it work. Regardless of the reason, this is great image and wonderful promo for the product.
