Well as long as the Government says it's OK.............. I think given their land mass, America and Canada could probably be allowed 14 squadrons on 4 airfields......between them. Our main Fighter as you know Neil is the Typhoon, a good one I admit.. But, if, when something happens and when we need the spares and parts to carry on building them, what happens.. Half come from as far away as Poland! Its only assembled in the U.K. its NOT British.. The only British aircraft is the Hawk.. Rob

I really empathize with you, Rob. I'm an American and I am as much for peace as anyone. BUT, Teddy Roosevelt was right "Walk softly, but carry a big stick". The compact nature and logistics of the European theater is quite different than that for us North Americans and I can only pay lip service to your situation. I don't even like to get started on this subject because my blood starts to boil so I will just say hang in there and hope the British Gov. the right thing for it's people.

Seriously though mate successive Governments of this country will not be happy till everything is dismantled and sold off. I was watching a program the other night about the great British post-war sports cars and how we exported all over to world to the point where we had to wait for cars here. Now nothing. Sadly Dave the British Gov will never do the right thing for it's people unless there is money in it for themselves. Just watch the farce that is Question Time every week.

I lived in Britain as a USAF dependent and loved the British aircraft. The Mosquito is on my all time favorite list. 2 Merlins, well, don't get me started. I know your country is in a hard place. I live in Arizona near Luke AFB and am watching the F- 35 flying. I hope this program continues and you obtain these airplanes. I would love to wring one out. We have a lot of incursions in the past year as well. I flew in the USMC, Phantoms. I used to intercept Russian aircraft when I flew of the USS Midway. Fun stuff. Our Air Force is also suffering dramatic cuts, including flying time. They are trying to retire the A-10 fleet and move the maintenance personnel to the F-35, but Congress has said no. The A-10 are very dramatic in the close air support role. However, that is affecting the IOC for the F-35. It takes money to remain free... Still, for you all, not much fun at the moment. 2 airfields feels like having all the fleet at Pearl Harbor...

What a beautiful pic of the Spitfires! Wars are always "come as you are" affairs. If you don't hace enough men and machines on hand you are in trouble. Also if you don't put enough money and time into training the personel beforehand then you are equally in trouble. Me thinks the UK is in trouble. US Congress take note!

This sounds like the 1930s - "Peace (read: pieces) in our time!". Same stupidity, history repeating itself. But, as for political parties, is Labour any better? They started the dismantling of Great Britain and its defense forces already back in the 1960s. The money went to social agendas, among other things all Common Wealth (read: crumbling wealth) passport holders flooding into the country. It's as bad here in Sweden. In the news yesterday the Immigration works are expecting 200,000 "refugees" and 60,000 "dependents" to enter the country this year (considering the wars in the Middle East). There are 8 million Swedes in Sweden, and over 2 million foreigners (many are Muslims). The Swedish politicians are selling out their country and Swedish citizens. Where's the money for this? Defense cuts. And Sweden has fly-overs, "friendly" underwater visits, violation of territorial waters, etc... yet they WON'T learn! Welcome WWIII? It will be over before the politicians can react. Today, there's NO time to arm AFTER the first shot's been fired. Modern arms are too complex to make in a few days time. AND, being dependent on foreign sources - forget about it. Shut down the military and roll out the red carpet for the inmarching (Goose-stepping? Goose-bumping?) foreign power(s). I think all available WWII planes would do a decent job. Modern planes fly fast, which gives the old prop planes a good chance to get onto the modern planes tail. Then a good heat seeking missile up the fantail! Happy fireworks! Hate to tell you this, Rob... but I believe the RCAF here is down to TWO fighter squadrons. One based at Bagotville, Quebec and the other at Cold Lake, Alberta. And our only fighter being the short-ranged CF-18 (F/A-18A)... for a country this size. And they want to replace it with the single engine F-35... and fewer of them! Oops, sorry... slipping into "Rant mode"... Great shot! But then... a pair of Spitfires (Mk.V's?)... how can you go wrong! :)

Fabulous photo of these two beautiful aircraft. there are actually three types of politician: The hard left who thinks only of social programs with no regard to defense or security the Hard right who only wants to build up the armies and other forms and goes looking for war. the third one is the rarest of all: the centrist or moderate - he understands the need for a solid armed forces while still working to help those who TRULY need the help and does all he can to make that help as painless as possible (minimal paperwork so as to not bog down the system) and he is drowned out by the ranting and ravings of the of the two extreme politicians. A shame really

Cool shot of the Spitfires, mate, exhibiting great prop blur, and on their way to intercept the Russian Bear bombers penetrating UK space, along with Sweden, Norway and other nations. Putin is really pushing it. I read today that he is trying to bring Russian back to the military status of the Soviet Union when it was the big gorilla on the block. I have no idea what the American squadron strength is at the moment. It must include the F-22, F-35, F-18, A-10 Warthogs, maybe even F-16s, I don't know.

Once again those who forget history are condemned to repeat it...... They've closed almost every USAF base I was stationed at here in the USA - I think we could still hold our own, at least for a while - and I'm pretty sure no Russian bomber would get close enough to do any damage before it got blown out of the sky. I don't know about ICBMs, though... I know they've been working on a laser system capable of taking out ICBMs - obviously, no one's talking much about it.. I think Putin is pushing his luck, though. He appears to be under the mistaken impression that we're too busy and distracted with ISIS at the moment that he can do whatever he wants. for the longest time in Canada, all intercepts were carried out using the Avro CF100 Canuck (also known as the Clunk) a big and brawny twin engine all weather fighter. And all weather it was, with bases up as far north as possible, the Canuck could reach threat altitude in under two minutes while every other plane would take ten or fifteen. The Canuck was supposed to have been replaced by the Avro CF105 Arrow but a change in government from Liberal (who had brought in development of not only the Canuck and The Arrow, but also the Canadair Tutor, the DeHaviland Bison and Caribou, the Beaver and Otter, and the Twin Otter, but also HMCS Bras D'or, the world's fastest navy Hydrofoil..... ) to conservative, killed the Arrow, and we were buying F101 Voodoos instead which were not all weather fighters, so the old Canucks kept flying and flying and flying.... but that's just me... nice pic, always loved the growl of a Rolls Royce engine!
