Description
There's a close up shot with a better view of the interesting characters riding in this which I'll post when I dig it up. Here I was farther back to show the display pedestal.

The first car to be driven across the country was a 1903 Winton. In 1903, Dr Horatio Nelson Jackson and his mechanic, Sewall K. Crocker, drove a Cleveland-made Winton, which he named 'The Vermont', from San Francisco, CA to New York. The physician from Vermont started this 5,500 mile trek on May 23rd and completed it on July 26th. The trip took 64 days, of which 44 were actually spent "on the road" - the rest of the time included breakdowns, delays while waiting for parts to arrive, and hoisting the Winton up and over rocky terrain and mudholes. There were literally no roads for much of the trip, no bridges across rivers, streams or gullies, no maps, no water and most significantly no gasoline, oil or tires save what could be stockpiled along their route by their own planning and foresight.

My car is a Ford, so I'm guessing this is what I look like each day on my way to work!

Apologies, but it looks like I had the photos for this mislabeled, not sure exactly what happened since they are from a trip to the museum a few years ago. The body looks very similar to the 1911 ford but the front with the spare tire and large central headlamp was bothering me... I thought maybe the crazy guys and their dog got creative with it ;) and went with what I had the photos labeled as. However, upon further examination I have determined this to be a 1903 Winton.
