Description

I was overwhelmed by the number of positive comments on "Interstellar Transport Goliath." This design is a bit of a departure for me, and I wasn't sure how fans of my work would respond to it. While I love doing fantasy starships, I personally expect that real Human spacecraft are likely to be much more functional looking, at least for the next few centuries. This project is an attempt to depict such a vessel. I am glad so many of you appreciated this foray of mine into more realistic spaceships. I hope to be inspired to do another such design in the future. As mentioned in the comments that accompanied the initial image of the titanic craft posted here, the design is meant to be a large interplanetary freighter that has been retrofitted with early warp-jump drive for use as an interstellar exploration vessel. In addition to replacement of the original drive systems, the freighter's crew quarter centrifuges have been replaced with alternate crew modules outfitted with artificial gravity generators. The original design probably had a lot more fuel tanks with the main fusion reactor located in the aft section rather than next section forward. Cargo modules would have occupied the entirety of the next two sections. Only the forward section would have held crew quarters and life support.

Actually Dave, I really like the way that this ship is constructed. It looks like something that could possible be built using technologies available today. You have some very good detail of all the different components without making the ship over complicated and busy. It has a more unitarian style that is more function then cosmetic which is what one would think that you would find if this was an actual ship being built for functionality. I am curious though about those thruster that you have mounted on top, bottom, left and right sides. Are these maneuvering thrusters? What is the scale of this ship? If the ship is design to have a crew of twenty or more then the maneuvering thrusters seems quite large. What is the ships complement for crew? Over all a very solid design! I look forward to seeing more angled shots of this ship in the future. Regards, David

As much as I've always enjoyed your ships (especially how you have a clearly defined "design philosophy and esthetic" for each of the groups in your categories, I've always been partial to the "near future" science fiction, things that are just a few steps removed from what we can do now. This fits nicely in that category, only adding a bit more interest because it's a "retrofit" where it's been adapted to the next step beyond where it started. There's a clear design philosophy and function behind each component, and you follow your over all idea through to its logical conclusion very nicely. The details and over all esthetic is fantastic. Definitely my favorite ship from you!
