Description
Snow slowly retreats from the english cottage... which I have now identified as the Robert A. Rocke House, built 1938-1939. The house was constructed for the Rocke Family by Dr. Harold D. Kesling.
Dr. Robert A. Rocke joined Dr. H. D. Kesling in his practice in LaPorte and they created The Kesling and Rocke Orthodontic Group (still going strong today.) Several years earlier Dr. Kesling had built an office building/workshop/garage from fieldstones he had collected from the surrounding countryside (that's 1930's depression era thriftyness for you ;) so he had some experience and wasn't just randomly chosen to build Rocke's house because they worked together ;) Kesling converted his workshop building into a dental lab when he founded TP Orthodontics (reserach & development of advanced orthodontic techniques and appliances to supply to other orthodontists) in 1943.
LaPorte Historical District property information states the following about the house:
"The one and a half story cottage has side gables covered in wood shingles and split-granite stone on the
first story walls. A front gable with a ridge slightly lower than the main ridge of the house is located on the
south half of the front façade. Its wall and gabled wall are covered in stone; a large stone chimney is
located in the center of the gabled wall. A small window is located north of the chimney. The entry door
is located north of the front gabled wall in a slight projection from the main wall of the front facade; the
projecting entry has a shed roof continued from the main roof of the house. The entry door is a wood
door with a small window in its upper north corner. To the north of the entry is a 6/6 window on the main
wall of the front façade, near the north end of the wall. The roof is covered in wood shingles."
