A statue from Versailles - possibly a musketeer? I would have thought all that floppy clothing with its decorative frills would have gotten in the way of their swordplay, but maybe that just added to the challenge...

Great statue photos today. I agree the clothing would seem to be in the way. I wonder if there are any stories of tangled swords. I do seem to remember old muskateer movies from my childhood that always seemed to include the expert swordsman removing buttons and bits of decor from the clothing of the enemy. :) I have been away on a little trip myself so I was not online much and missed a lot of commenting. But, I just want to say I appreciate your fantastic photography and the info you share. I really enjoy looking. Thanks for sharing.

I reckon they did more admiring of each other and the ladies than actual fighting. Superb photo.

I agree with Andrea that they likely tried to avoid fighting as long as possible, and then probably went in some sort of pared-down ensemble that was more practical for fighting. But still, I'm sure from time to time there were accidents attributable to inappropriate attire! Excellent shot!

Great sculpture.

Cool capture of the overdressed combatant in this cool image. Just sculpting those folds and pleats must have been a challenge. And, along with the hot clothing, lets not forget those heavy boots while dueling to the death.

I do enjoy the statue but wound not be able to stand the old dress code!
