Description
Greetings Folks,
Returning to the Legends series now and here is another last surviving example of its type in the world.
The Boulton Paul Defiant Mk 1, there is another Defiant in Canada, this is the trainer/target tug example and it is is excellent condition, try to see it if you can..
The Defiant was a two-seat turret fighter, operated with mixed fortunes during the Battle of Britain period but finding its niche as a night fighter in the 1940-42 period, as well as extensive use later in the war for air-sea rescue and target tug roles in the UK and Middle and Far East.
N1671 was taken on RAF charge in August 1940 and operated by No 307 (Polish) Squadron RAF from September 1940, being operational from December 1940 after working up and training; Last operational user was No 285 (Anti aircraft Co-Operation ) Squadron from June 1942. Now the sole surviving intact example of its type, originally set aside for preservation in September 1944! Appearing from its packing crate for museum display in 1960, N1671 was completely restored by Medway Aircraft Preservation Society at Rochester Airport after many years on display at RAF Museum Hendon, and returned to Hendon for further display in 2012, being reassembled for display in early 2013.
It is not know it has any 'kills' to its credit.. It did fly on active service..
Zoom is possible.. Taken inside the Battle Of Britain Hall, Hendon..
I have booked so far this year (I hope), a trip to Hendon, Cosford Airshow (there will be taxing Jaguars, and the TRS2 will outside on the static display row, Vulcan is booked!) and at least on Duxford show is planned..
More Brooklands tomorrow.
Rob

These did come into their own as a night fighter. Although they lacked the performance of a Spitfire and Hurricane I bet any BF109 and 110 pilots got a bit of a shock when attacking from the rear thinking it was a Spitfire or Hurricane and the turret opened up on them.

As always, cool info and shot.

A fine view of this nightfighter painted example. If the RAF had mounted forward firing machine guns on the Defiant it would have been a much more effective fighter.

A fantastic looking aircraft Rob, great shot.

Nice shot!!!!!!!!

Awesome! I am a sucker for "under dogs", and the Daffy certainly qualifies! The "turret fighter" concept must have seemed like a good idea at the time, but once the Germans realized they could attack them head-on with impunity...

Awesome capture of this plane - bit of cool history

I don't know, that sure looks like a WWII Russian Il-2 Sturmovik to me. In any case, a neat POV and overall aircraft ambiance in this indoor shot, mate.

Very sleek looking airplane - you got a great shot of it, and as always backed it up with interesting history. Well done, Rob!
