Description
This is an eastern gray squirrel. No, you don't have to check your color settings. He has melanism. This is an increased concentration of melanin in the skin, fur or feathers. He has the dark fur. Moguli was caught by a cat at about 2 weeks old. He had several bites as well as a collapsed lung. I had to take him to work with me for 2 weeks. 4 times a day I inserted a hypodermic needle into the chest cavity to release the air trapped there. This keeps the lung inflated. He has healed very well. As you can see, he is very handsome. I had a heck of a time getting his picture. He was very curious about the camera and wanted to be right on it. I expect to release him in about 4 weeks.

Awesome capture, I have seen squirrels like these and a total black one up in Canada and a white one in Kansas City, MO. Both where awesome to see and I had never caught any except this one since. It neat to see these, rare colored squirrels, ain't it!

Wow stunning photo,he is adorable,we have a daily normal grey squirrel that visits,he eats my birds nuts while hanging upside down,& is nesting in the branches of a tree, which is covered in ivy.saw him one day with nesting material.last year, there were four of them sitting on my fence, unlucky for me I didn't have my camera out of the time.

Wow! A black squirrel. From it's name I was thinking an oriental critter (like, Jungle Book). Melanism in animals, too. Lucky little fellow to have you take care of him. The needle in the pleural cavity is done to humans, too, is a suction system can't be applied. Considering how small he must have been, the procedure must have been done very delicately. And, my, does it hurt (parietal pleura is SO sensitive). Did he understand you were trying to help (i.e. no biting)? As for the camera, I'm surprised you still have it, considering all the curious critters you've photographed! This is one darned good photo of an active little fellow. Keep up the good work! :-) PS - thanks for all the comments on my recent posts. I now have to placate a jealous Roman soldier!
