Your art is as much about what you leave out as what you put in - I love the way most of the lines in this do not connect, yet it still works!

there is something very 1930's and 1940's about the image, and it also has a touch of the 1890s. Part of the "retro" feeling is in the modest pose of the woman, holding herself "in" so she doesn't expose too much. (That's actually a 1950's style too...the famous photograph of Marilyn Monroe comes to mind.) The way you've painted her gown, it seems to "explode" from the waist down, into a big spread-out flower. And you painted no legs, so we see her caught in mid air (very effective). She is curved to the picture's left, and yet she faces to the picture's right, so you have very nice balance there. And her hair is 2 simple "waves", with 3 droplets for earrings. And you paint your usual expressive lines, varying in thickness and thinness. (Your painted line reminds me, at times, of Al Hirschfeld; and, at other times, of Saul Steinberg; and, at other times, it has a very Oriental life in it, mixed with the vital variations of a calligrapher's pen.) A very expressive painting, with a lot of energy "exploding" through her dress. Her facial expression is surprisingly calm, considering the motion in the lower half of the painting. As usual, you've captured a real contrast of human features. A beautiful job, with---once more---a very fine use of white space. I've only commented a little on RR, in the last month, so forgive my absence. But I do look very closely at everything you do; and it's all very artfully done.
