Description
To see who shot first you had to lag
And if closest to the pot you could brag
Then carefully eye the one closest to you
And shoot it and hit it if your aim was true
The object being to send it into the hole
hoping all the while not to get a bad roll
for if you hit it you got to shoot again
and could keep on shooting stopping only when
you missed or got all of the marbles to fall
into the hole and that would end it all
our back yard was made for marble play
hard-packed earth that turned smoky gray
warriors were well-prepared for marble wars
and immune to the pain of marble shooting sores
bags and tins of “mibs” of every color and size
peewees, purees, boulders, and shooters to prize
every kid had a collection and a favorite
and his special prize was the one you tried to get
Rolley Hole is the name of that game of skill
Great to play when you had an afternoon to kill
Another we played is simply called Ringer
Again you’d shoot marbles with a flick of your finger
But this time from outside a circle drawn in the dirt
.... I’ll tell ya all about if we can flirt ?

I recall shooting marbles as a kid. always wanting a "Stealy" to destroy your competitor. brings back memories

I had a great collection of "Puries", of course before technology forced everyone indoors.

I'll trade three cat's eyes for a big steelie. Oh, but I think kids today won't ever know the pleasure of this game - or rolling hoops, tops, yo-yo's, jacob's ladder, cup and balls, whirli-gigs - nope, just Candy Crush and Clash of Clans... sigh, so much is lost.
