Description

Donald Trump isn’t exactly one of my favorite people: not like I know him or anything, but I have to admit that he added something distinct to Chicago. I’m not exactly crazy about some of the things that pass for skyscrapers in the city known for its skyscrapers. So many of the newer monster-structures look more like pre-fab model-kit output than the architectural and engineering marvels they must surely be, given their height and Chicago’s meteorological conditions. The Trump Tower is somewhat different. On good days. The very structure of the building reflects its environment. Literally. It’s a highly-reflective spire with a tiered structure that makes nodding reference to the buildings surrounding it. The pedestrian-level walkway follows the natural contour of the Chicago River. In short, it was a wonderful paradox: something elegant and bombastic all at once. Though the building has lost none of its cold, austere elegance, it has gained a bit more bombast, as Mr. Trump has decided to place his name on the river-facing side of the building. Calling the tower by its name wasn’t enough. In this age of rampant, steroid-fed hyper-capitalism, the building must also be Branded. Thankfully, it’s branding isn’t really visible from its southern walkway. Hopefully it stays that way. I don’t really mind tacky bombast as long as I don’t have to see/hear or otherwise sense it. As always, thank you for viewing, reading, and commenting, and I hope you’re all having a great week.

I hate it when they ruin beautiful buildings with ugly signs and brands - just let the building stand on it's own beauty. I suppose it's a reflection of the massive ego that builds such things. I prefer a nice small Alpine Mountain type town.

I have just been watching Celebrity Apprentice with Mr. Trump, I did get a bit fed up of all the adulation he got but I enjoyed the programme. As for the building, the jury is out but great pic & narrative as always. x

This is a beautifully designed architectural view, and your capture composed it so harmoniously. Love those sinuously curving lines, it's almost like a pinup for building engineers!

Donald Trump is the poster boy for the very worst aspects of soulless, capitalistic greed, but I can still appreciate the beauty of this architecture - at least what I can see of it from your wonderful photo. I love the sinuous curves & the reflected light (on the glass, as well as the golden hues bouncing off the smooth, polished metal columns). This is a stunning image...

While I have no love for the man, I have to say that his design tastes are almost in line with how I view the world, ALMOST! Great capture and interesting narrative Thanks

Mr Trump is an odd bird for sure, but this particular shot shows he does have SOME imagination. About his hair.........lol

I posted a shot of this a ways back, I think. (And you commented very kindly on it, considering it was on a 2 MP camera and wasn't all that good.) I agree with what you said, here, and with what you said or implied about Trump. He's not a well liked guy, and his hair is a major problem for civilization...And if you got a "stunning" from Andrea for a heavy urban shot, you hit the jackpot. She gets shivers from heavy urban environs...(I'm starting to, myself.) The shot is wonderful, another example of how a new camera has freed parts of you that the older one couldn't---and btw, let me make it absolutely clear that you've been a terrific photographer from the start, there was nothing whatsoever missing with your old camera work...I'm just saying that higher resolution and all the other things that come with a newer instrument can step a fine artist to the next level, and it's like we get to see parts of your vision that were in you all this time, but couldn't fully come out. You captured the swirl and its shadows and reflections with real sweep. And nice shadows, and very bold presences from top to bottom. (Looming.) With a lot of light pouring into the privacy of the walkway. More fine work, Chip, you make me see this city and its environs with new eyes; and for a 66 year old veteran of this place, that's an accomplishment. (Here's the link to my shot---I'm pretty sure this is the same tower, just not as good a shot. You already commented, so don't worry. http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=2341817&user_id=575782&page=12&member&np) And I like the word 'Branded' for what the Trumps of the world do. Very fine shot of this strange and oddly beautiful structure...

This is one of my favorites you've ever posted! I love how the curves feel so organic, or like something you'd find in a cliff-dwelling, but the artificial faceting of it should break that feeling up. Which it oddly doesn't! The perspective makes me feel like I'm looking at a winding cliff made out of giant crystals or something, which would be so cool. Absolutely amazing shot, and one of your best ever. (which is really saying something!)
