Description

Old photo from years ago after the Potawatomi Indian statue was given its flower bed (note it has no flowers yet here.) Prior to this, it sat in a reflecting pool. The Indian was originally on another side of the building between the courthouse and the county complex in what was historic Independence Plaza. The plaza was removed and replaced with a parking lot. (bleh!) When plans were made to remove the plaza, commissioners discussed moving the statue to the Door Prairie Auto Museum (which later became the Historical Society Museum.) A fortuitous problem occurred, however, when it was discovered that the sculptor, Howard DeMyer, stipulated the Indian must always face east. At the museum it would have faced west. The sculpture was then moved to the east side of the courthouse where all can still see it not just those visiting the museum. See photos 1 & 2 for more info on statue. A stellar capture of a truly cool sculpture, an Indian displaying his defiance with either two spears, or a lance broken in half. And love all that brickwork surrounding him.
