Description
yesterday outside of a restaurant I seen hundreds of these on a tree. the trunk was nearly covered from the branches to the ground. the trunk was probably 10 inches in diameter
well, I obviously took some pictures and this is one.
later at home I seen a different variety on my Live Oak tree

They are called tent caterpillars and they run in cycles some years they explode and can defoliate whole forest's. We had them really bad where I live a few years ago. They go in cycles because the predators that eat them also explode in numbers because of all the extra food source, the predators dwindle down the population and it takes a few years for them to regain in numbers. We had them so bad every time you walked outside they would fall out of the trees, it was raining caterpillars! I kill them with raid when I see them because I have a lot of fruit trees. It does make a beautiful picture though!

I have held them and have never been bothered by their hairs, I guess you would have to be sensitive to them.

This looks like one of those 'tent' caterpillar invasions. Nice photo!

impressive capture...take care of your eyes or your skin...danger stinging diseases, do not let a dog lick the caterpillars !!! He could lose his tongue !!!
