this image explodes, full-size. (Ie, zoomed.) The rape of the Sabine women was probably a 'normal' tale, to the ancients of the world; but it's terrifying today. The whole idea that the conquering nation can just overrun a culture, and rape its women---it's frightening. You depicted this with great power. For one thing, you cropped this so the men are "cut off" at the legs and the tops of their headsL This brings us "inside" the scene, "in medias res," in a way. Second, the men seem lifeless, which I suppose conquerors are once they've taken over a country. And it takes a lifeless heart to do what they're doing. ("Better to be feared than loved," Machiavelli, in translation.) And you have amazing patterns on the skin of these men---they look like tall ghosts, almost, also prehistoric glyph paintings. There's something nightmarish about the patterns on these men, they're very primal. Also, it's as if their skins were made of oil that's smearing all over the surface. In English, "oily" often means a sneaky person, someone who dominates others through very sneaky, hidden means. The oil fits the Romans here, very well. But your women are stark silver, and they stand-out stunningly from the men. And you've used very expressive poses, one woman is hiding herself in terror; and the other woman is looking down in shame, covering her breasts. And the men surrounding her have lifeless gazes---a little like the Roman busts themselves. They're 'monoliths' taking over the lives of these very real women, who are terrified and shamed. By putting two men in the foreground, with a man in the background (looking at us), you've "trapped" the women between these men. And you've made the women's terror even greater... If there was ever an outcry for the Rape of the Sabine Women, this is it. It's beautifully done, with your usual sense of great detail. And your imagination is, as always, quite deep and acute. And I see that appr 1/3 of your commenters looked at this full-size (zoomed): That's a shame, because this piece demands full-size: It's quite powerful full size. A stunning evocation of the tale, and very humanely done, Giuliano.
