Description
I found this character protruding from a wall at the Chateau d'Amboise. The light was pretty low & I don't think a flash was allowed, so I ended up shooting it handheld at 1/4 second & I postworked the color quite a bit to add drama to it...

If you wanted to capture the terrifying essence of grotesques, you got it in spades here! Like Andrea says, this guy's looking into hell. ("Abandon hope, all ye who enter here...") Your color is eerie and wonderful, it's bottom lighting taken to a new high. And the reddish tint suggests hell all over..."Grotesque" is related to "grotto"---a fact of no use except that I like to use the word "grotto" whenever I can: It sounds deep, dark and eerie. I know that grotesques were used to scare away evil spirits, but who knows who this is. Could be a relative of the original owners of the Chateau, or someone they didn't like (I'm being serious, people would put their enemies into horrible statues to curse them), or some previous owner, or a lord, I have no idea. Not knowing, in your picture, makes it all the more mysterious. Terrific work with the hues and deep shadows and crop, Claude. It's as if this is the way the grotesques, themselves, would like to be seen, rather than as gray stone. He's probably texting his friends in Chartres "wait'll you see how this guy did me up!" Love what you did with this.

I always wondered how the carvers decided who and how to portray their figures. Nice work under tricky circumstances!
