Reminds me of Cezanne. Or even Courbet. Either way it's very good!

Yes, Cezanne comes to mind. And even Courbet---Courbet for the darker 'brooding' elements. And Cezanne for the broad rectangular brushstrokes (almost rectangular), the cezanne greens and reds (deep, saturated) with the orange and yellow highlights, the roughness of the textures, and even the shapes themselves. But---I don't wanna make this out to be an 'imitation', because it's all yours, and I know your still lifes, and this is a helle piece through and through. (You can take the cezanne talk as a high complement.) This has bold strokes, almost oil-like even though they're watercolor. We can see the wash in them, but there's bold pigment too, esp in those greens and reds. And bold red fruits against all that green---complementary colors, total contrast (which was very big with impressionists and post-impressionists, Cezanne being one of the 2 greatest of the latter) (the other being Van Gogh). The bottle has inner life too. I like when you use strong light hues here, to pick up the darker hues. And the 'layout' (can you believe I just said "layout," like this were an ad???)---the composition has a skew, a rough random feeling, even though it's ordered. (I like the roughness.) I hope you keep doing these, Helle, even if some of them turn out in ways you're not crazy about, just keep exploring these, using color however you feel it, letting it burst on the canvas for you, letting your bold strokes turn walls and fruits into bold dramas, like the varying colors in the wall or in the center bowl. You're diving into these, and It's very exciting. (And your signature is a sudden piece of Chinese name-seals! Great contrast. If you want to be 19th C, btw, you're gonna have to sign "helle" in big fat script, across the bottom. Like "vincent" or "cezanne". But those two artists ((van gogh being 'vincent'---he only signed his first name, which is pretty ballsy, lol)) would applaud your name-stamp, because they adored Oriental art.) Wonderful to see you paint, Helle. You're exploring real power in these.
