Description
Depicted are the RAF Rolls Royce Griffon powered Supermarine Spitfire Mark XIV's and the Italian made Fiat G-55 fighter aircraft.
Reading up on the Mark XIV, I was fascinated to learn that with the updated Griffon engine, top speed for this model was 446 miles per hour (718 km/hr) at 25,400 feet of altitude and that the impressive beast could reach an altitude of 20,000 feet (6,100 m) in just over 5 minutes!
I really like this quote from Wing Commander Peter Brothers, O/C Culmhead Wing, a Battle of Britain veteran; "It was truly an impressive machine, being able to climb almost vertically - it gave many Luftwaffe pilots the shock of their lives when, having thought they had bounced you from a superior height, they were astonished to find the Mk XIV climbing up to tackle them head-on, throttle wide open!" That's a pretty impressive statement about an aircraft that was flying in 1943.
The Mk XIV's first test was as a V-1 rocket bomb interceptor, a task which it excelled at among all the Spitfire variants. Although it was used in many roles, including reconnaissance, the Mk XIV was successfully employed as a high altitude air superiorty fighter by the 2nd Tactical Air Force.
Gotta love this machine. Whatever the model and power, the Spitfire still has the power to spark the imagination of anyone who loves airplanes and flight.
Supermarine Spitfire Mark XIV: Excellent model available for free at ontarget3d.com by VK. Textures tweaked of course.
Fiat G-55: Another excellent model by that craftsman at large, Pedro Caparros, available generously for free at sharecg, also a bit of texture tweaking.
Pilots: Epici low poly Enemy soldier and adh3d's USAAF pilot pack both available here at Rendo.

Oh yeah.. The Spitfire was one of the best in ww2. But I like the the lines of the G.55 too. Very dangerous in this airspace with two dangerous aircrafts... well made.

Stunning work Bill. It's been a while :-)

I don't think any more need be said about the Spitfire, with the addition of the Griffon engine it became the most beautiful ' beast '. The Fiat was another elegant Italian design, not quite as refined as the Macci 200 series, but overall a better aircraft. Of interest, the Germans fitted two G55's with Daimler Benz 603 engines, the aircraft out performed the Me-109G & K and the Fw-190A......The Germans removed the engines and forbade any further conversions.... Great image Bill, but you know anything with a Spitfire will sell....

Neil and I have seen Spitfires at Flying Legends (as has Sig).. And so powerful and fast are the Griffon powered beasts that they have to fly in separate formation.. Nuff said! This year at Legends there are gong to be 12 Spitfires (so far!), that's a full Squadron.. Imagine... Now this is a glorious render, most impressive and the action works well.. Love the damage on the one that's been hit.. Well done Bill Rob
