Description

Captured back on 8/15/09, during my third visit to the beautiful Huntington Botanical Center and Conservatory in beautiful San Marino, California. To be more specific, Bonsai, just one section of the beautifully maintained Japanese site at the Botanical Center. Bonsai, literally, plantings in tray, from bon, a tray or low-sided pot and sai, a planting or plantings, pronunciation is a Japanese art form using miniature trees grown in containers. Similar practices exist in other cultures, including the Chinese tradition of penjing from which the art originated, and the miniature living landscapes of Vietnamese hòn non bộ. The Japanese tradition dates back over a thousand years, and has its own aesthetics and terminology. Sayonara.

Excellent photo. This a very interesting one too. It looks as though it is quite an old planting which has been wonderfully maintained for some time. Quite an art form to say they least. Thanks for the bit of history on this and those of the other cultures; I didn't know those bits of information.

Two great and very interesting shots. The big one must be very old. I like Bonsai very much and I have three different species of them. They need a lot of care.
