In the story the dog promises the cat "always to chase him up a tree". Here's an excerpt from the poem, which is about Kiplings's perceptions of the differences between his cat, Pussy, and his dog, Binkie, related to the story: Pussy can sit by the fire and sing, Pussy can climb a tree, Or play with a silly old cork and string To 'muse herself, not me. But I like Binkie my dog, because He knows how to behave; ... The tree is modified some from one of Esha's Crooked Trees.
