Description
"Keeper of the Plains"
This majestic Welded iron Statue created by Native American artist Black Bear Bosin, is at the confluence of the Big and Little Arkansas rivers in Wichita, KS. Bosin created the statue to commemorate the contributions of Indian tribes in the great plains. Not shown, but behind the trees in this picture is the Great Plains Indian Museum. On the left, and a little down river is the Exploration Place Science Museum. Notice the scale of the sculpture by the people at the base of the rocks. Detail on the upward gazing face of the sculpture can best be seen in full size. In the water [river is almost at flood stage] in an arc around the base of the pedestal are large rocks with firepots on top that usually burn at night to simulate camp fires. At flood stage, they automatically shut down.
