Description

As I start each spring, I am usually overwhelmed with babies. At that point, I don't have time to think about the release days. My brother helped me this year by raising two doves. He decided to bring them to my house to release them. The best part of rehabbing wildlife is the release. The joy and wonder these animals have when they realize they are free is beyond compare. This makes all the sleepless nights worth it. Then I start to remember that I can no longer protect them. I am not there to feed them, fix hurts and keep bad things from happening to them. Life in the wild can be hard. People in general make this much worse than it should be, Humans often respond to any animal that annoys them by killing it. When I think of all this, my heart hurts. When I see the joy on their faces at the time of freedom, I know I have to put my feelings aside and let them go. I watched my brother go through all of these emotions when he let these little ones go. This is a shot of one getting some last words of advise from him.

" The joy and wonder these animals have when they realize they are free is beyond compare. " I think thats a bit over the top. Animals have no concept of joy or wonder. They just have the instinct to survive and procreate.

I think that any person who is so closed minded that they have never known the unconditional love of an animal must have lived a very sad and vacant life.

Thank you for posting these pictures, Bev. I miss these little guys, but I am happy they are free, and I could not think of a better place to release them. As for StuartB, I just feel sorry for him. People who consider humans, especially themselves, as the crown of creation are robbing themselves of some of the most profound and wonderful gifts this life has to offer.

"Animals have no concept of joy or wonder" I wonder if this person has ever had a pet greet them at the door when coming home from work or a trip to the store.... Has he never seen a dog do the happy dance for his/her human, or get excited at the prospect of a game of fetch, or just going for a daily walk? Or looked into the eyes of a dog or cat abandoned at the shelter? I'm not going to waste time trying to convince someone to believe what they don't wish to, but if one doesn't think animals have emotions, one is not terribly observant. Your photos and stories are wonderful and moving. Keep doing what you do.

All animals have feelings , I once helped a new born foul still wet from its mothers waters across a 5 acre field and into the stables and was given the chance to release it back into a field , the look joy on it's face when it realised it was free to run and jump still gives me pleasure today, the look of pleasure and anticipation on my dogs face when we play ball or go for a walk ,all animals feel pain ,fear, hunger and confusion even wild ones. Keep up the good work.

Thanks, Bev. Another beautiful photo. And the dove is NOT being held by the toes - it's holding on by itself. Shows the trust this bird has! Unfortunately it can't smile, but its behaviour shows its joy. My ratties were able to make some faces when happy, angry or sad. Thanks for posting this! :-)

Oh dear poor StuartB, sounds like my sister, no empathy at all. I love to see all your amazing critters & hear of their release. I can imagine also that you worry about them when they are released.

I am hopeful that gentleman probably never had pets, their lives would have been a misery! Rather like what is said of people after a divorce, better to be from a broken home than to live in one! I have great respect for anyone that helps animals, we are all in this togehter, and yes they definitely know they are free, some even return occasionally for a short visit !!!!

Yeah, I know the feeling. Touching moments... :) And yes, animals do have feelings too. Better still: they don' t lie or fake as humans do. Great pic ! Peter
