Description

I was focusing on the adult Mississippi Kite on the right when I saw him react to something and panned left just as another Kite was landing. It all happened so quickly that I didn't move fast enough or far enough to get both his wings in the frame. This is not an aggressive action as they often react when another bird approaches and make a series of chirping greeting sounds. This is probably parent and child. Two seconds later they were settled and peaceful, which I'll show in my next post. (the sky was leaden gray cloud cover, I changed the color to a more pleasing blue.) The Kite just about to land is more than likely a yearling, as adults do not have mottling on their underwings, as can be seen by the adult on the right. You may remember that last year I documented the birth and fledging of "Junior the Mississippi Kite" across the street from me. Mississippi Kites often return each year to the same tree. Since that tree was cut down after being struck by lightning, the parents chose a tree a couple of hundred yards to the north, in an area I do not have access to. So no baby pics this year. But I do enjoy see them flying about the neighborhood. The yearling is very likely "My" Junior from last year. Better detail in zoom. Thanks very much for your views and comments.

Fabulous foto taken under less than ideal conditions, Maria. I really like the composition, patterns, textures and sense of greeting as revealed in the image. You have humming birds and Mississippi Kites to photograph; I have run-of-the-mill crows, sparrows, and pigeons to snap, which aren't really as esoteric.
