a very sad day for me yesterday - 4 of the chicks were gone. I was pretty sure that today they would all be gone - whatever took them, knows where this nest is. Today I checked, one chick is STILL here.

I believe it is a snake skin. Wrens sometimes use them to line their nests (as perhaps you would to line your hat!)
