Description
Volume II – Episode 95
Where: Melbourne, Australia
When: 1 month and 3 days after E-Day, 6:12 pm
It was on the walk back to our cars that I realised the time was coming when I'd have to say goodbye to my new (and very pretty) acquaintance. I had to admit I wasn't quite ready to part ways with her just yet. Despite everything - despite the fact that I still barely knew her, despite my usual overwhelming desire to be alone, despite bawling my eyes out in front of her at the unfairness of my impending and inevitable death - despite all of that...I was really enjoying her company.
The closer we got to our cars, the more I felt like I was running out of time. Could I invite her over to the hotel room where I was staying? Would she even accept? Would she really want to come, or would she just feel compelled after my teary cancer confession earlier in the day? And if she did come over, what would we do? What would we eat? I was a terrible cook, and the hotel still didn't have any power. And what if she was sick of me already and just wanted to say goodbye?
By the time we reached the sidewalk, my mind was in fever pitch. Should I invite her? Should I not? What should I do?
I opened my mouth to speak.
But she spoke first.
"Come over to my place," she said. "I'll cook dinner for you. I need to thank you for setting up NAPR for me."
I blinked, momentarily stunned. "You don't have to thank me," I said. "It was fun. I enjoyed spending the day with you."
It was a risky thing to say, but she smiled. "Me too. So you'll come over?"
"Yeah, I mean...if you're sure?"
"Good!" she said. "After dinner we can watch that Seth Rogen movie I was telling you about. I really think you'll like it."
"Okay. Sounds fun!"
"Good!" she said again. "So...follow me?"
"Yep!"
She walked to her car, and I felt my heart flutter as she flashed me a brilliant smile.
As we drove away, I caught a glimpse of the little girl's house as the front door cracked open and a pair of small arms pulled the box of food inside.
I smiled. It had turned out to be a really good day.
