Description
At least half a dozen US states have chosen the Northern Cardinal as their "state bird" and it's easy to see why.
Detail better in zoom. Thanks for looking!

This is really an extraordinary beautiful little bird! I like how his black face contrasts to the red feathers - a brillant capture! By the way: is it true that the Maine State Bird is a mosquito? 8=))
CavalierLady
No, that isn't true about the mosquito. Every state has its own state symbols - state animal, bird, berry, fish, dessert, flag, flower, gemstone, insect, motto, nickname, tree, song, seal, etc. The Main State bird is the Black-capped Chickadee. See each state here, if you wish: http://www.statesymbolsusa.org/

Wonderful capture of a magnificent cardinal! Never tire of seeing these guys at my bird feeder in the winter, and at the bird bath in the summer.

I suppose that Cardinals and Blue Jays are my favorite birds because they are the most colorful local birds.very sharp focus

A crisp and beautifully detailed shot! It is such a striking colour and the beak looks like it could crack some pretty large seeds for it's size!

They are amazing to see; I miss them here! We had lots when I lived in Virginia, and they were very vocal and gregarious.
