Description
Spotted on a hike a couple of days ago. It remained calmly resting on a leaf while I came in very close, almost touching it, in macro mode.
According to Wikipedia:
"The butterfly is named after Pierre Joseph Michel Lorquin, a French naturalist who came to California from France during the gold rush, and made important discoveries on the natural history of the terrain...The butterfly resides mostly in forest edges, mountain canyons, parks, streamsides, fencerows, orchards, and groves of cottonwood and poplar. Usually the butterflies feed on California buckeye, yerba santa, privet, bird droppings, and dung. They are extremely territorial and will attack any intruders into their habitat, including large birds."
A butterfly attacking a large bird? That's something I'd like to see...

that's a beauty butterfly !

beautiful creature !!! Smaller birds will also attack crows (and hawks) if they come around nesting areas. We, as a species, are also very territorial about so many things.... good thing for politicians, huh ? :)

How beautiful! And I also would love to see a butterfly attacking a bird; what sort of threat could they possibly exert?
